Lyonbiopôle, a World Center of Excellence in Diagnostic and Vaccines
Lyonbiopôle is one of France’s 7 world-class competitiveness clusters since November 2005. Its President is Philippe Archinard, CEO of Transgene, supported by a ten current members board which includes world’s premier firms such as Sanofi Pasteur, bioMérieux, Merial, BD, high potential SMEs (Alizé Pharma, PX Therapeutics) and centers of excellence (CEA, Inserm, Lyon University and the Mérieux Foundation).
Lyonbiopôle aims to manage human and animal infectious diseases in a global approach in order to meet public healthcare needs by :
- Building a “healthcare shield” to fight human and animal infectious diseases and viral-induced cancers
- Developing innovative diagnostic, preventive and therapeutic solutions and delivery systems for more responsive, personalized medicine,
Lyonbiopôle is built on the distinctive know-how of Lyon and Grenoble in the Rhône-Alpes region, an alliance between industrial biology, structural biology and micro and nano-technology.
It promotes a major R&D network of 2500 researchers in infectious diseases (half in the private sector, half in public research) and 4000 researchers in micro and nanotechnologies including 300 specialized in healthcare applications.
Lyonbiopôle: a booster for an Innovation and Knowledge based Economy
The cluster’s founding members and partners have designed Lyonbiopôle as a “factory” for producing multi-partner R&D projects and a means to link the industrial and academic spheres and bring them closer together.
Lyonbiopôle: a global resource for the growth and the competitivity of biotech companies.
The cluster supports companies in their international development to set up collaboration with foreign companies and laboratories. It helps to gain access to private investors. It provides a full network: The Business Development Managers Club, The Lunch Break Partnering, The Partnering Days.
Since 2005, Lyonbiopôle has fostered 53 multi-partner R&D projects representing €374 M of investment which granted €150 M public funding from the State, the European Commission and the local authorities.
The Infectious Disease Center: a cornerstone of Lyonbiopôle’s action plan
Public and private research groups have expressed their needs, which include hosting mixed research teams, sharing activities and equipment, maintaining dialog and organizing research networks.
In response, the Infectious Disease Center, located on the Charles Mérieux Campus, will offer joint organization of R&D activities and shared services for the cluster’s partner research teams.
The real estate development program will be carried out in 2 steps:
- Opening of the Domilyon building in April 2009
- Extension in 2012/2013 (with a new building)
Charles Mérieux Campus: key figures
- 16,000 sq. m. (172,000 sq. ft) of high-level laboratories and facilities,
- 1,000 researchers and related staff in the field of infectious diseases,
- 50.25€ million in overall real estate investment for the years 2007-2013, financed by the French State and local authorities, including the Rhône-Alpes Region, the Rhône County Council and Greater Lyon.
